Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 05/16/2018

Receipts: 5,208 Two weeks ago: 1,228 Year Ago: 819

Compared to Two weeks ago: Feeder steers and heifers were too
lightly tested sale to establish any market trend. Demand this
week was mostly moderate on moderate to heavy offerings, demand
did diminish as the sale pushed into the evening. Quality this
week was mostly average to attractive. Several long strings of
backgrounded load lot offerings sold this week these offerings
were met with mostly good demand. Many farmer feeders were in the
stands this week bidding on offerings as grass time is upon us.
However with the recent downturn in CME contract prices all buyers
showed some reserve as they bid on offerings. Market activity this
week was moderate to active. Weigh up cows sold on mostly moderate
to good demand for moderate offerings. Packers were not as aggressive
this week as they bid on offerings, with the exception of flesh cows.
Packers were content with letting cows go to feed or putting them on
feed themselves. Slaughter cows sold steady to 2.00 lower on boning
and lean cows, while breaking cows sold firm. Feeding cows sold
generally steady. Slaughter bulls sold on light demand for light
offerings. Bull quality was mostly average to attractive this week.
Slaughter bulls sold mostly 3.00-4.00 lower. 2-3 year olds to young age
cows sold on mostly moderate to good demand this week. Quality was mostly
average to attractive. Demand for rebreed cattle was very good this week
as buyers looking for older offerings pushed young cows sharply higher
in places. Feeding demand remains stagnant as buyers continue to worry
about finished cattle prices. A heavy offering of cow calf pairs were
seen this sale and the stands were packed with buyers looking to fill
summer pastures. Demand for pairs was light to moderate. Quality this
week was average to attractive. With high winter cost and CME sliding
lower buyers showed some reserve as they bid on offerings. Feeder cattle
receipts were 52 percent steers and bulls, 48 percent heifers; 73 percent
weighing over 600 lbs. Offerings were 49 percent feeder cattle, 5 percent
slaughter cows, 1 percent slaughter bulls, 8 percent feeding cows and cows
returning to the country, balance bred heifers and cows. Next sale will be
Wednesday May 23rd 2018.
